Volunteer: Unpaid individuals who respond to incidents.
On-Call/Retained: Paid for their availability and attendance, but not full-time.
Military: In some countries (e.g., France, Denmark), parts of the fire service are military.
Industrial/Company: Firefighters employed by specific companies or industrial sites.
Seasonal: Especially for wildland firefighting.
You would not be surprised to hear that In motor sports, where there is a threat to life from vehicle collisions bursting into flame, Formula 1 firefighters and fire marshals Motorsports Formula 1 firefighters follow a robust fire safety system which is a critical component of every Grand Prix event. These aren’t typically “Formula 1 employees” in the sense of working directly for the F1 organization year-round, but rather are an integral part of the safety crews provided by the host circuit and overseen by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile).
“This has been a great achievement and comes after a year of demanding work, overseen by Michael Tait our Quality Manager. Michael and his team should be immensely proud of what they have achieved. This accreditation gives our customers increased confidence in our products.”
Nick Rowbottom, MD Viz Reflectives
At every Formula 1 circuit, there are numerous Fire Marshals stationed at strategic points around the track, in the pit lane, and in the paddock areas. Their primary role is to provide immediate fire-fighting coverage for vehicular fires, especially those resulting from crashes. Many of these fire marshals are volunteers, often members of local motorsport clubs or even professional firefighters in their civilian lives, who dedicate their time to ensure race safety
In addition to the static marshals, there are often dedicated rapid intervention vehicles staffed by highly trained teams. These vehicles are strategically placed around the circuit to respond quickly to incidents. These crews often include firefighters equipped for vehicle fires and equipment to extract drivers from burning vehicles.
